Call for Art – ARTUNG Reacts to Attack on Montreal’s Public Space

ARTUNG CALLOUT FOR ARTISTS AND COMMUNITY MEMBERS 1 Call for Art ARTUNG Reacts to Attack on Montreals Public Space
ARTUNG – Our Streets, our art, our choice!

The Montreal-based ARTUNG has issued an open letter to its community and potential collaborators concerning a forthcoming public art intervention the group is organizing for later this spring.  Their (slightly modified) call is reprinted below.

Montreal’s public space is presently under attack by commercial media companies – Pattison, CBS Outdoor and Astral Media.

Here and in many cities around the world, these companies are using our streets for commercial purposes (by legal and illegal means), while neglecting to think about the communities that they affect.

Inspired by projects and organizations such as TOSAT, Casseurs De Pub and The Anti-Advertising Agency, a number of citizen-based collectives have decided to come together to take back the streets of Montreal by coordinating a gigantic, community art project.

Since we intend this art ‘collage’ to be a wonderful surprise to the community, we cannot divulge too much information right now BUT what we can say is that we’ll be taking to the streets late spring to show Pattison, Astral and CBS that community is stronger than profit!

How Can You Help ?

Our goal is to erect 200 art pieces in the streets of Montreal and so, we need artwork submissions from you and your communities! If you’re interested in contributing a piece, please drop us a line here.. We will promptly give you all of the necessary details for submissions. (Like more information about our local campaign, dimensions for your art pieces, shipping addresses, what’s in it for you, security issues etc.).

We are also looking for graffiti artists. Drop a line here if you want more information.

Need more info about the local campaign? Don’t think that your artistic skills are up to par? Are you a better blogger than painter? Does your community group have a message they want to propagate? If so, there’s a spot for you in our project! Please contact us for more information about ongoing roles, blogging and our community building component.
