The Textile Museum of Canada Adventures into Feminism, Fibre, and Thread with Judy Chicago

Yesterday, the Textile Museum of Canada opened When Women Rule the World: Judy Chicago in Thread, an exploration of the artist’s contribution to contemporary textile practice.  On display through September 7, 2009, the show spans more than three decades of Chicago’s work, including her major works Birth Project (1980-1985), the Holocaust Project (1993) and Resolutions: A Stitch in Time (1994 to present).

Showing alongside the main exhibit are five artists inspired by the legendary artist’s practice.   Official museum language describes the “renaissance in second-wave ideas and aesthetics among young feminist artists” that inspires work across a broad range of mediums, from video to embroidery, performance and sculpture.  The show, titled She Will Always Be Younger Than Us, includes exhibiting artists Orly Corgan, Gillian Strong, Wednesday Lupypciw, Cat Mazza and Ginger Brooks Takahashi.
