Elections in the United States draws global attention, and this October, Germany is closely examining its own understanding of the superpower through cinema. The Werkleitz Festival, scheduled for the 24th – 26th of October in Halle (Saale), is titled “AMERIKA,” and takes a socio-historical look at different understandings of the United States. Curators Daniel Herrmann and Marcel Schwierin offer that East and West Germany toed the the official line of “friend or foe” while subversive groups within each state differed in their framing of American power. Their goal is to portray these differences and also offer U.S. perspectives of Germany. The festival will be mainly comprised of screenings, supplemented by workshops and panel discussions on the role of cinema.
