UPDATE: While writing this story, the AP reported that the activists have each been sentenced to a 10 day detention.  You can stay involved and informed at the Students for a Free Tibet website.

As previously reported on Groundswell, a number of activists have been detained by Chinese authorities for their pro-Tibet protests during the Olympics, including artist James Powderly.  The latest update, after 60 hours of detention, is that China has not announced the detentions (as it is required to do within 72 hours under international law) and there is no word from the detainees.

Tibetan nun Sonam Yungzom was killed on August 10th while shouting out: “There are no human rights in China, there is brutal oppression in Tibet, still the Olympics go on in China.” Sources say she was hit by five to six bullets and then her body was thrown in a vehicle and taken away.

Students for a Free Tibet is reporting at least one other death, two non-fatal woundings, and two grandmothers sentenced to a year in a labor camp for applying for a protest permit.

In the video below, SFT Executive Director Lhadon Tethong talks about the latest action in Beijing at the Bird’s Nest, and the detentions and repression in Tibet and China related to the Olympic games. You can see more video updates at Free Tibet 2008 TV online.
