überculture Collective

überculture is a non-profit collective committed to reclaiming culture by supporting independent, political art and challenging corporations that endanger free expression. Founded in Montreal, QC, in 2003, they’ve embarked on some very interesting, ambitious, and successful projects:

  • The creation of an international political cinema network.
  • Two cross-country tours exposing Wal-Mart’s destructive business practices through agitprop theatre and multimedia presentations.
  • Numerous political concerts, talks and workshops by independent artists and media makers.
  • The development of überbrü, a non-profit, political beer.
  • Successfully pressuring a Montreal cafe chain to switch to Fair Trade coffee.
  • Research leading to Norway’s divestment of over $450 million in Wal-Mart stock.

They also hatched the [B]ad Truck Project, about reclaiming public space – specifically aimed at combating the visual, public, atmospheric, cultural, sexist, and all-pervasive invasion by armies of ad trucks (a.k.a mobile billboards).
