As I head off to see the Weakerthans reunion tour tonight, I was reminded by a friend about Propagandhi. John K. Samson, the lead vocalist for the Weakerthans, was once the bassist for this anarchism-inspired rock outfit from Winnipeg, Manitoba.
They championed veganism, animal rights, and, according to Wikipedia, have “taken an active stance against human rights violations, racism, homophobia, imperialism, fascism, capitalism and religion.” Their releases frequently included multimedia content regarding social justice campaigns.
After building a solid fan base through a stint on Fat Wreck Chords, they started the G7 Welcoming committee Record label, which operates on Parecon principles, and has released hugely popular International Noise Conspiracy and Weakerthans records.
i went to that weakerthans show out here. isn’t it nice that someone can be so socially minded with one music project and so personally minded with another? wait, isn’t it? i don’t know, i like both bands exactly equally, exactly.
ps. i’m pretty sure propagandhi still tours and john samson still plays with them.
pps. why are your links light gray, i can barely read them.
