The Laramie Project

The Laramie Project is a play by Moisés Kaufman and members of the Tectonic Theater Project about the reaction to the 1998 murder of Matthew Shepard in Laramie, Wyoming. The murder is widely considered to be a hate crime motivated by homophobia. Today marks the nine-year anniversary of Matthew’s death. The attack took place after midnight on the night of October 6, 1998, and he died of his injuries in Poudre Valley Hospital, Fort Collins, Colorado, approximately five days later.

There was also a 2002 film adaptation, directed by Kaufman for HBO, and including such big names as Christina Ricci and Steve Buscemi, which I recently watched. The play and movie have been one of the most widely recognized and successful achievements in art and activism, so while we mourn Matthew’s death, we celebrate the hate crimes legislation and anti-homophobia awareness it catalyzed.
