Art and Free Software

In the words of Wikipedia, The Free Software Movement aims “to give freedom to computer users by replacing proprietary software under restrictive licensing terms with free software, with the ultimate goal of liberating everyone in cyberspace.”

Recently, at the iCommons iSummit, held in Dubrovnik, Croatia, there was a panel held on Why Don’t Artists Use More Free Software (Quicktime link, 93MB). The video-taped discussion, which I have yet to watch, was introduced to me as “strange and contentious.”

At any rate, it is an interesting question. I almost exclusively use free software for my non-artistic needs. I am admittedly wrapped up (pinned down?) in the Adobe Creative Suite. As an infrequent Ubuntu user, I could be using GIMP, or Ubuntu Studio. Apple owners could be using Pixelmator. Those are just off the top of my head, and are only graphics editing software – it hardly scratches the surface! So, why aren’t we taking full advantage?
